Glassy gemmy colorless crystals of quartz measuring to almost 8.0 cm in height coming off matrix with minor calcite and pyrite. In terrific condition. Collected in the late 1990s. An excellent example for rare locality piece.

Rosia Montana, located in the Alba county of Romania within the Apuseni Mountains, is one of the oldest and most famous gold mining districts in Europe. Geologically, the deposit sits within the Metaliferi Mountains and is hosted by a complex Miocene maar-diatreme vent breccia system, alongside dacite and rhyodacite intrusive domes that cut through older sedimentary rocks. The precious metal mineralization occurs extensively as disseminated zones and within structural veins rich in gold and silver, alongside unique local mineral species. Historically, mining in the area began in pre-Roman times and was formally established as the Roman mining center of Alburnus Maior, with written records dating back to 131 AD. Following centuries of intermittent underground extraction by various empires and local operators, the state-run industrial operations transitioned to open-pit mining in the 1970s before the state-run enterprise officially closed in late 2006.
