Light pink rhombohedral crystals of rhodochrosite to 3.5 cm in size across the front of matrix. Minor pyrite is present. This is in good condition. Quite nice for this Greek locality.

The Kassandra Mines in Chalkidiki, Greece, are a group of historic mining operations that have been worked since ancient times for gold, silver, lead, and other metals. Mining activity dates back to at least the Classical Greek period and continued through Roman and later periods with varying intensity. Modern mining resumed in the late 19th and 20th centuries with the development of underground and open pit operations. The deposits occur in complex hydrothermal systems hosted in metamorphic rocks, and the district remains an important mining area in Greece today.
