The Sweet Home Mine, situated near Alma in Park County, Colorado, was established in 1873 as a silver mine. While its early operations targeted silver-bearing veins, miners regularly encountered and discarded deep red rhodochrosite crystals, which interfered with the silver processing methods of the era. Geologically, the mine is located within the Colorado Mineral Belt along the Mosquito Range, where the vein system is hosted by Precambrian metamorphic and igneous rocks rather than the surrounding Paleozoic sedimentary strata. These steep, fault-controlled veins formed approximately 30 million years ago when mineral-rich hydrothermal fluids, heated by Tertiary magmatic activity, deposited quartz, fluorite, sulfides, and highly pure manganese carbonate. Following the decline of silver mining, the operation shifted focus, and by the late twentieth century, the mine was reopened strictly for specimen reclamation, producing some of the largest and most intensely saturated rhombohedral rhodochrosite crystals ever documented before its permanent closure in 2004.
