An outstanding miniature for the species from this locality, clusters of pink crystallized rhodochrosite in a cluster without matrix. In very good condition all around. These were never common even when the mine was operating, and the mine closed in 1962. A true North American classic.

The Montreal Mine, located in Iron County, Wisconsin, was an important iron mining operation within the Gogebic Range, a major iron producing region in the Lake Superior area. Mining began in the late 19th century and focused on extracting high grade iron ore from banded iron formations through underground methods, with operations continuing until the mine closed in 1962. In addition to its primary iron production, the mine is known among collectors for rare occurrences of rhodochrosite, a manganese carbonate mineral. At this locality, rhodochrosite typically occurs in small amounts as pink to reddish masses or crystalline coatings within the iron rich host rock, often associated with other manganese bearing minerals. Because rhodochrosite is uncommon in this type of deposit, specimens from the Montreal Mine are considered rare and of special interest to collectors.
