Rhodochrosite with Arsenopyrite

specimen number:
2312237

location:
Trepca, Kosovo

description:
Light pink crystallized groupings of rhodochrosite to 1.0 cm in diameter across the top they crystallized arsenopyrite matrix. This is in great condition. Quite good for the species at this locality.

The Trepca mineral complex in Kosovo has a mining history spanning centuries, with formal written records dating back to medieval times in 1303, though extraction occurred during Roman times and expanded under medieval Saxon miners. Modern industrial operations began in 1927 when a British company, Selection Trust, established Trepca Mines Limited, with regular production officially starting in 1930. The complex operated through various twentieth century regimes before production severely declined and eventually ceased around 2000 following regional conflicts. Geologically, Trepca is world-renowned for its massive hydrothermal skarn and replacement lead, zinc, and silver ore deposits. These deposits formed within complex volcanic and sedimentary rock sequences, driven by Tertiary magmatic activity that created an exceptionally rich environment for diverse and well-crystallized mineral specimens.
