Rhodochrosite with Quartz
specimen number:
2262275
location:
Sunnyside Mine, San Juan Co., Colorado, USA
description: The Sunnyside mine, situated within the Eureka mining district near Silverton in San Juan County, Colorado, was a premier underground silver-lead-zinc and gold operation located high in the rugged San Juan Mountains. Geologically, the deposit is a classic epithermal vein system structurally controlled by the regional Eureka Graben fault network, which developed during the collapse of the mid-Tertiary Silverton Caldera. Hydrothermal fluids circulating through these widespread faults and fractures precipitated complex base and precious metal ores within a gangue dominated by quartz, rhodochrosite, and rhodonite, creating rich vein networks filled with galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and native gold. Historically, the original vein outcrops were discovered in 1873, but large-scale industrial extraction expanded significantly after Terry and Associates took control in the late 1890s and built advanced tramways and milling facilities. The mine operated extensively through the twentieth century under various management structures, including the Standard Metals Corporation, which famously dealt with the catastrophic Lake Emma collapse in 1978 when the underground workings accidentally breached the bed of an overhead glacial lake. After structural rehabilitation, corporate operations resumed until low base-metal prices and escalating environmental and regulatory pressures forced Echo Bay Mines to permanently halt all production and close the facility in 1991.
Pink rhombohedral crystals of rhodochrosite across the top of a crystallized quartz matrix. Classic material for this locality. In good condition.
