Rhodochrosite with Quartz

specimen number:
2312431

location:
Cavnic, Maramures Co., Romania

description:

Beautiful classic from Romania with pink curved crystals of rhodochrosite in groupings to 2.0 cm in size on a matrix of sparkling white crystallized quartz. In terrific condition. At one time this was part of the collection of Peter Bancroft and comes with his label.

Cavnic, located in the Maramures region of northern Romania, is a historic mining district with metal extraction dating back to medieval times and sustained commercial operations through the twentieth century. Geologically, the area is situated within the Neogene volcanic belt of the Eastern Carpathians, where epithermal vein deposits formed through hydrothermal activity associated with calc-alkaline volcanism. Mineralogically, the district is world-famous for its rich polymetallic sulfide veins, producing exceptional, highly aesthetic museum specimens of quartz, rhodochrosite, calcite, sphalerite, galena, and various sulfosalts that are treasured by collectors globally.

Dr. Peter Bancroft (1916-2015) was a renowned California educator, geologist, author, and world-class mineral collector. Holding degrees in geology from the University of California at Santa Barbara and Stanford University, he combined a professional career as a school superintendent with a lifelong passion for mineralogy. Bancroft served as a curator and museum director, traveled extensively to remote mining districts globally to study classic localities, and authored major reference books including "The World's Finest Minerals and Crystals" and "Gem and Crystal Treasures". His award-winning personal collection and extensive documentation significantly advanced public and scientific appreciation for fine mineral specimens.
