Franklin, New Jersey, located within the Sussex County zinc mining district, is world famous as the fluorescent mineral capital of the world and boasts a mining history dating back to the mid-18th century, with major industrial operations ramping up in the late 1800s and continuing under the New Jersey Zinc Company until operations finally closed in 1954. Geologically, the ore deposits are contained within a unique Proterozoic metamorphic terrain where ancient carbonate sequences underwent intense regional metamorphism, folding, and high-temperature alteration. Mineralogically, the district is astonishingly diverse, hosting over 350 different mineral species, several of which are found nowhere else on Earth, and it is internationally celebrated for ores like zincite, willemite, and franklinite that exhibit brilliant and vibrant fluorescent colors under ultraviolet light.
