Iragna, located in the Riviera district of Ticino, Switzerland, is a classic Alpine locality famous for high-quality rutile specimens found within its expansive gneiss quarries. Geologically, the area is part of the Lepontine dome of the Central Alps, consisting of high-grade metamorphic rocks, specifically the Iragna Gneiss, which underwent intense deformation and recrystallization during the Alpine orogeny. The rutile occurs within "Alpine-type fissures" or pockets where hydrothermal fluids deposited minerals in cavities created by tectonic stretching. These rutile crystals are typically found as deep red to metallic black, slender needles or robust prismatic crystals, often exhibiting excellent twinning and a high adamantine luster, frequently associated with quartz and hematite. Historically, Iragna has been an active center for stone extraction since the 19th century, with several large quarries like the Gnosca and Lodrino complexes operating continuously through the 20th century to the present day. While the quarries primarily produce dimension stone for global construction, they have remained a steady source for mineral collectors who monitor the active faces for newly exposed pockets. Today, specimens from Iragna are highly valued in European collections for their sharp crystallization and the unique geological context of the Penninic nappes.
