description: The Binn Valley, or Binntal, located within the Valais canton of Switzerland, is an internationally celebrated alpine mineral locality renowned for producing exceptional, highly lustrous, and complexly twinned crystals of rutile. Geologically, this rugged valley is cutting through the deep metamorphic core of the Penninic nappe stack, where the famous Lengenbach deposit features a unique arsenic-rich dolostone, while the surrounding peaks contain extensive hydrothermal quartz veins known as alpine clefts cutting through Mesozoic-age Binnental gneiss and mica schists. During the late, fluid-dominant cooling phases of the Alpine orogeny, titanium-bearing hydrothermal fluids leached titanium dioxide from the surrounding silicate host rocks, slowly crystallizing inside these low-pressure open fractures to form exquisite, hair-like, deep red, or dark metallic-black rutile crystals that are frequently found perched on smoky quartz, hematite, or adularia. Historically, while the localized Lengenbach dolostone was mined underground on a small commercial scale for iron ore and sulfosalts during the mid-nineteenth century, the vast majority of the valley has never been subjected to industrial open-cast or heavy mining operations. Instead, the recovery of world-class rutile specimens has been conducted exclusively by traditional Swiss crystal hunters, or strahlers, who have manually searched the steep slopes and high cliffs for centuries, with documented specimen quarrying intensifying in the late 1800s and continuing under strict local environmental regulations and municipal permit systems through 2026. This centuries-old tradition ensures that antique and modern Binn Valley rutiles remain globally recognized, highly revered benchmarks of classic European alpine mineralogy. Dr. Ludwig Eger (active c. 1870-1915) was a highly respected Austrian mineral dealer based in Vienna who played a significant role in the distribution of Central European and Alpine mineral specimens during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Operating under the firm name "Dr. L. Eger," his business was situated in the heart of Vienna, a primary hub for scientific exchange during the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Eger was noted for his professional, academic approach to the mineral trade, often supplying high-quality, systematic collections to universities and major museums throughout Europe and North America. His labels are easily recognized by their classic 19th-century typography, typically featuring "Dr. L. Eger, Wien" (the German name for Vienna) and providing detailed locality and species data in a formal, structured format. In addition to minerals, Eger dealt in paleontological and zoological specimens, as was common for the natural history establishments of the time.
Lustrous crystal groupings of rutile measuring to 0.5 cm in size across the top of matrix with quartz. In good condition. The specimen comes with an antique label as shown at the end of the video. This label gives an original acquisition date of 1910 for the specimen.
