Langban, located in the Filipstad municipality of Varmland, Sweden, is a legendary mining district with operations dating from the 16th century until its closure in 1972. Geologically, the deposit consists of separate iron and manganese oxide pods enclosed within a rugged dolomite and leptite metamorphic framework that underwent intense high-temperature alteration and metasomatism about 1.8 billion years ago. Mineralogically, it is recognized as one of the most mineral-rich places on Earth, having produced hundreds of unique species featuring complex combinations of heavy metals like lead, arsenic, and antimony. Among its important discoveries is sahlinite, a very uncommon lead-antimony oxychloride mineral that occurs as micro-crystals within the complex skarn assemblages unique to this historic Swedish locality.
