Located in Varmland, Sweden, the Langban mining area near Filipstad began operations for iron mining in the mid-1500s, later expanding into manganese and dolomite extraction before permanently closing its doors in 1972. Geologically, the deposit sits within a Paleoproterozoic carbonate and volcanic sequence that underwent intense regional metamorphism, skarn formation, and late-stage hydrothermal alteration, yielding an exceptionally diverse inventory of rare minerals. Among these unique discoveries is sahlinite, a rare lead-antimony oxychloride mineral originally identified within the complex carbonate and skarn assemblages that make this historic Swedish mining camp a world-renowned mineralogical type locality.
