Scheelite with Fluorite

specimen number:
2102041

location:
Level 5, Camp Bird Mine, Ouray Co., Colorado, USA

description:
Lustrous pseudo-octahedral crystals of scheelite measuring to almost 2.0 cm in size on matrix with crystalline fluorite. This is in very good condition. Collected in 1989, very choice for the species from this famous Colorado locality.

The Camp Bird Mine was developed in the late 19th century and became a major producer of gold and silver from quartz veins hosted in volcanic rocks. Scheelite formed as a tungsten bearing mineral within these veins and is often found as small yellow to brown crystals associated with quartz and sulfide minerals. Specimens from the Camp Bird Mine are of interest to collectors because they represent tungsten mineralization from one of Colorados historic precious metal mining districts.
