Siderite

specimen number:
2262287

location:
Roxbury Iron Mine, Roxbury, Connecticut, USA

description:
Rich lustrous cleavage masses of siderite throughout matrix. Good reference example for the species and locality.

The Roxbury iron mine, situated near the town of Roxbury in Litchfield County, Connecticut, was a historic underground and open-cut iron extraction facility located on Mine Hill. Geologically, the deposit consists of a highly distinct, structurally controlled hydrothermal vein system hosted within Paleozoic metamorphic rocks, primarily the Hartland Formation schists and gneisses. Deep-seated tectonic activity allowed iron-bearing and carbonate-rich fluids to fill regional fault fractures, precipitating massive bodies of siderite alongside minor quartz, pyrite, chalcopyrite, and galena. Historically, the outcrop was discovered around 1750 and initially prospected for silver, but its true value was realized as a premium source of steel-making iron ore, leading to the construction of an early blast furnace and systematic quarrying during the Revolutionary War. Large-scale industrial underground shaft-sinking and commercial extraction peaked after the Civil War under the Shepaug Valley Mining Company, which modernized the site with a large stone blast furnace and roasting kilns to produce high-quality carbon steel. Commercial extraction systematically declined due to fierce competition from higher-grade Lake Superior iron ranges and high regional transportation costs, resulting in the permanent cessation of all mining operations at the site by 1905.
