Siegenite

specimen number:
2262045

location:
Musen, Hilchenbach, Siegen-Wittgenstein, Arnsberg, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany

description:

A superb toe-nail size example for this rare species, a real German classic. Bright lustrous metallic crystals of siegenite measuring to 0.5 cm in size scattered across the top of matrix with chalcopyrite. All of the prominent crystals are in good condition.

The Musen mining district, located near Hilchenbach in the Siegen-Wittgenstein region of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, is one of the most famous historical mining centers in the Siegerland. Geologically, it is characterized by hydrothermal siderite veins hosted within folded Devonian slates and graywackes, which were later enriched with nickel, cobalt, and copper sulfides. The Stahlberg mine, the most prominent in the district, was documented as early as 1313 and remained a major producer of high-quality iron ore for centuries. Historically, the district saw its peak industrial activity during the 19th century, with most operations, including the famous Victoria and Stahlberg mines, closing by the mid-20th century, specifically around 1931. Musen is particularly renowned as the type locality for siegenite, a cobalt nickel sulfide mineral. At this site, siegenite typically occurs as steel-grey to silver-white metallic grains or rare octahedral crystals embedded within a matrix of siderite or chalcopyrite. These specimens are highly significant to mineralogists as they represent the original discovery material used to define the species in 1850, reflecting the complex geochemical environment of the Siegerland vein systems.
