Peru has a deep history of silver production dating back to indigenous cultures in the first millennium, such as early smelting in the Lake Titicaca Basin, and expanding dramatically under the Spanish colonial empire. Geologically, these prolific deposits are situated within the Andean mountain range, a convergent plate boundary where subduction-related magmatism occurred during the Cenozoic era. This tectonic activity generated vast porphyry copper and epithermal systems. The silver is primarily concentrated in the shallower, low-to-intermediate sulfidation epithermal veins and carbonate replacement deposits. Within these geological settings, silver occurs inside hydrothermal veins and breccias, often hosted alongside base metals like lead, zinc, and copper, forming minerals like argentiferous galena and silver sulfosalts.
