Silver

specimen number:
2273002

location:
Bulldog Mine, Creede, Mineral Co., Colorado, USA

description:
Very rich wires of native silver across a quartz matrix. Acanthite present as well.

The Bulldog mine, located within the historic Creede mining district of Mineral County, Colorado, was a highly productive underground silver and base metal operation that exploited a major fault-controlled vein system. Geologically, the deposit is situated within the Tertiary-age Creede Caldera complex, where a thick sequence of volcanic ash-flow tuffs, rhyolites, and sedimentary lakebed deposits underwent intense structural fracturing. Hydrothermal fluids circulating through these open fault zones precipitated low-sulfidation epithermal mineralization, creating thick quartz-carbonate-barite veins rich in native silver, acanthite, and silver-bearing tetrahedrite, along with significant quantities of galena and sphalerite. Historically, while the Creede district saw immense activity during the late nineteenth-century boom, exploration specifically targeting the Bulldog Mountain fault system intensified in the mid-twentieth century, leading Homestake Mining Company to officially open the modern Bulldog mine in 1969. The operation maintained steady underground production for over a decade, serving as a primary driver of the local economy until collapsing global silver prices and declining ore grades forced Homestake to permanently cease all mining and milling operations in 1985, after which the site underwent extensive environmental reclamation.
