description: The Kongsberg Silver Mining District, located in Buskerud County, Norway, is one of the most historically significant precious metal localities in Europe. Geologically, the deposit is characterized by fahlbands, which are strata-bound sulfide-bearing zones within Precambrian gneisses and schists that were later intersected by silver-bearing calcite veins during the Permian period. The site is world-famous for its native silver, which occurs as spectacular wire-like, curled, or "rope" formations, often reaching remarkable sizes and exhibiting high purity. Historically, mining and quarrying began after the discovery of silver by two children in 1623, leading King Christian IV to establish the town of Kongsberg and the Royal Silver Mines in 1624. The operations were a cornerstone of the Danish-Norwegian economy for centuries, involving over 80 different mine shafts, with the deepest reaching over 1000 meters. Large-scale industrial production continued with varying degrees of intensity until the mines finally ceased operation in 1958 due to depleted reserves and economic shifts. As of 2026, the Kongsberg mines are preserved as a national museum and remain a primary reference for mineralogists studying the crystallization of wire silver.
A loose robust curdling grouping of native silver wires without matrix. A superb European classic thumbnail specimen.
