Silver with Copper

specimen number:
2133295

location:
Keweenaw Peninsula, Michigan, USA

description:
A mass of native silver, this hosting a small mass of native copper. In good condition all around. Classic Michigan thumbnail specimen.

The Keweenaw Peninsula region of Michigan hosts the world's largest accumulation of native copper, a unique geologic deposit consisting of nearly pure metallic copper, while nearby shale formations contain massive copper sulfide reserves. This mineralization formed roughly 1.05 to 1.2 billion years ago within the Mesoproterozoic North American Midcontinent Rift, where copper-bearing hydrothermal fluids deposited the metals within basaltic lava flows, interflow conglomerates, and overlying sedimentary layers. Indigenous peoples conducted the earliest mining and quarrying via shallow pits as early as 8,000 years ago, creating tools and trading the raw metal extensively across eastern North America. Modern commercial operations began following a major rush in the early 1840s, initially focusing on the native copper fissure veins and lodes of the peninsula proper, which peaked in production between 1880 and 1930 before declining and largely ending in 1968. However, regional mining persisted further southwest at the massive White Pine Mine, a copper sulfide operation that sustained the district for several more decades until its ultimate closure in 1995 marked the official end of large-scale copper mining in the region.
