Skutterudite with Galena
specimen number:
1052575
location:
Schneeberg, Saxony, Germany
description: Metallic gray semi lustrous crystallized skutterudite on matrix with galena. Minor quartz is present as well. Fine old German classic for the species. The specimen comes with an antique label as shown at the end of the video and dates at least of the very early 20th century. The Schneeberg mining district, located in the Ore Mountains of Saxony, Germany, is a world-renowned mineral locality famous for its historic silver, cobalt, and bismuth production. Geologically, the region is characterized by a dense network of hydrothermal veins hosted within Paleozoic metamorphic rocks, primarily schist and phyllite, that were intruded by the Eibenstock granite during the Variscan orogeny. These veins are part of the classic five-element formation containing silver, bismuth, cobalt, nickel, and arsenic, which led to the discovery of numerous rare mineral species including erythrite and smaltite. Historically, mining began in the mid-15th century following the discovery of massive silver deposits in 1470, sparking a famous silver rush. As silver ores were depleted, the district transitioned to mining cobalt for blue glass pigment from the 16th to the 19th centuries. Following World War II, the district saw a final period of intensive activity between 1946 and 1958 when the Wismut company extracted uranium for the Soviet nuclear program. Today, the mines are closed to commercial production, but the district is preserved as part of a UNESCO World Heritage site and remains a foundational locality for the study of mineralogy.
