Yellow botryoidal crystallized smithsonite nicely covering most all sides of this matrix. The crystals form stalactitic groupings and are in very good condition.

Mining in the Wenshan area of Yunnan, China, is associated with carbonate hosted lead and zinc deposits that have produced a wide range of secondary minerals. Operations in the region have been carried out on both small and moderate scales, with a focus on extracting base metals from mineralized zones within limestone. In addition to its economic output, Wenshan has become well known among mineral collectors for its attractive smithsonite specimens. The smithsonite from this locality commonly occurs as botryoidal masses and smooth coatings with a distinctive yellow coloration, sometimes showing soft luster and subtle banding. These specimens formed in the oxidized zones of the deposits where zinc bearing solutions reacted with carbonate rich environments.
