Smithsonite (2265)

specimen number:
8811740

location:
Yanga Koubenza, M'Fouati, Bouenza, Republic of Congo

description:

Attractive translucent bluish green botryoidal crystallized smithsonite covering most of this matrix. In great condition. Very similar in appearance to the familiar specimens of the same species from New Mexico.

Recent mining at M'fouati in the Republic of Congo has focused on lead and zinc deposits hosted in sedimentary rocks of the Niari Basin. Small scale operations and exploration have worked oxidized zones where secondary minerals formed from the weathering of sulfide ores. The area has produced minerals such as cerussite, smithsonite, and other secondary lead and zinc species. Specimens from M'fouati have attracted interest from mineral collectors because of their crystal quality and unusual forms.
