Smithsonite

specimen number:
8311177

location:
Tsumeb Mine, Otjikoto, Namibia

description:
Gorgeous sparkling green crystals of smithsonite covering the front of matrix. This is in excellent condition. The green color generally thought to be the result of the presence of minor copper. Classic material for this famous locality, this is a real good one.

The Tsumeb Mine in Namibia is one of the most famous mineral localities in the world, particularly noted for its remarkable variety and quality of secondary minerals, including smithsonite. Mining operations began in the early 20th century and focused primarily on the extraction of copper, lead, and zinc from a complex pipe like ore body. Smithsonite, a zinc carbonate mineral, formed in the oxidized zone of the deposit and is especially prized for its wide range of colors, including green, blue, pink, and brown. At Tsumeb, smithsonite commonly occurs as botryoidal crusts, stalactitic forms, and smooth, banded masses, often associated with other secondary minerals such as malachite and cerussite. The unique geochemical environment of the mine allowed for exceptional crystallization and preservation, making Tsumeb smithsonite highly sought after by collectors. Although mining ceased in the 1990s, specimens from Tsumeb continue to be regarded as some of the finest examples of smithsonite ever discovered.
