Smithsonite (832)

specimen number:
8811776

location:
San Antonio Mine, Santa Eulalia, Chihuahua, Mexico

description:
Sparkling crystallized smithsonite covering most all of the brecciated matrix. This is in good condition all around.

The San Antonio Mine, located in the Santa Eulalia mining district of Chihuahua, Mexico, is part of a historically important group of polymetallic deposits known for producing lead, zinc, and silver. Mining in the Santa Eulalia area dates back to the 18th century, with extensive underground workings developed to follow ore bodies hosted in limestone. The San Antonio Mine contributed to this long history of production and is also recognized among collectors for its mineral specimens. The deposit has yielded a variety of minerals, including smithsonite, galena, sphalerite, calcite, and fluorite, often occurring in well formed crystals within cavities. The complex geologic setting and prolonged mineralization processes in the district have resulted in a rich diversity of mineral species, making the San Antonio Mine an important locality both economically and mineralogically.

This specimen was on public display at the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show, 2026.
