description: The San Antonio Mine in the Santa Eulalia district of Chihuahua, Mexico is part of a historic mining region known for rich lead, zinc, and silver deposits. Mining in the district began in the 18th century and expanded greatly during the late 19th and early 20th centuries as underground workings followed mineralized replacement bodies and veins hosted in limestone. The Santa Eulalia mines produced large amounts of galena and sphalerite along with silver values and supported the growth of nearby mining communities. The district is also well known among mineral collectors for fine specimens of minerals such as fluorite, calcite, smithsonite, and various sulfides from mines including San Antonio.
Sharp scalenohedral crystals of what were once calcite measuring to 2.5 cm are in size now replaced by crystallized smithsonite and set nicely across the top of matrix. In excellent condition. The specimen was displayed at the 2026 Tucson Gem and Mineral Show.
