Malyshevo in Sverdlovsk Oblast, Russia, is one of the most famous emerald producing localities in the Ural Mountains, with mining activity beginning in 1830 following the discovery of emerald bearing veins. The deposit is associated with metasomatic zones where beryllium rich fluids interacted with ultramafic and schist host rocks, creating conditions favorable for the formation of emerald and related minerals. In addition to emerald, the locality is known for alexandrite and a variety of other mineral species formed under complex hydrothermal and metamorphic conditions. Mining has been carried out through both underground and open methods at different times, with periods of active production and decline depending on economic and political factors. Malyshevo remains an important historic and scientific locality, representing a classic example of emerald mineralization in the Ural region.
