The Naica mining district, situated in the municipality of Saucillo within Chihuahua, Mexico, is a premier skarn and carbonate replacement deposit renowned for its base-metal mineralization and immense gypsum crystals. Geologically, the deposit consists of an intricate system of hydrothermal mantos, chimneys, and mineralized tears cutting through a thick sequence of Cretaceous limestones belonging to the Aurora Formation. The ore-forming process was driven by deep-seated Tertiary felsic dykes, which channeled high-temperature, metal-bearing fluids into the host rock, precipitating massive lead, zinc, and silver sulfides that were later partially altered by regional groundwater activity to produce rich oxidized and hydrated mineral cavities. Small-scale mining began at Naica following the formal discovery of silver veins by prospectors in 1794, but systematic industrial exploitation did not scale up until the Penoles company acquired and modernized the property around 1900. Large-scale underground operations for zinc, lead, and silver continued continuously through the twentieth century, and despite a major accidental flooding event in 2015 that halted deep industrial extraction, limited maintenance and specialized surface operations have persisted into the twenty-first century.
