Sphalerite after Calcite with Pyrite

specimen number:
2312032

location:
Turt Mine, Satu Mare Co., Romania

description:
An unusual and I think very neat piece, this showing crystallized black sphalerite forming casts after now gone crystals of calcite. Very sharp and well defined. Pyrite, barite, and galena are all present as well. Very unique and mineralogically interesting.

The Turt mine, situated in Satu Mare County within the northern mining region of Romania, operates in an area characterized by Neogene calc-alkaline volcanic activity and complex hydrothermal vein systems associated with the Carpathian volcanic chain. Historically, the mine was part of an extensive network of polymetallic deposits in the region exploited for base metals like lead, zinc, and copper. Following the cessation of active commercial operations in the early twenty-first century, the underground workings became known to mineral collectors for a variety of secondary mineralizations and associated ore specimens.

Pseudomorphs form when one mineral replaces another while preserving the original crystal shape or morphology of the host mineral. This occurs through a chemical replacement process where circulating hydrothermal fluids dissolve the initial mineral phase while simultaneously precipitating a new mineral into the resulting cavity or onto the dissolving crystal surface. In instances where a mineral like sphalerite replaces an earlier crystal template such as calcite, the incoming zinc sulfide solution gradually substitutes the original calcium carbonate structure, resulting in a distinct pseudomorph that retains the outward form of the original crystal geometry while completely altering its internal chemical composition.
