Lustrous black crystals of sphalerite measuring to almost 4.0 cm in size across the top of a crystalline chalcopyrite matrix with quartz. In good condition with very minimal damage present. Nice combination piece. Pyrite is present as well.

The Animon Mine is located in the Huayllay District of the Pasco Department in the high Andes of central Peru. Geologically, it is part of the prolific Huaron mining district and is situated within a complex hydrothermal system that formed during the Miocene Epoch. The deposit consists of silver-rich polymetallic veins and replacement bodies hosted in Cretaceous-aged sedimentary rocks, including limestones and conglomerates, which were subsequently intruded by volcanic rocks. These mineralized structures are typically controlled by a series of northeast-trending faults and fractures. Historically, the mine has been a significant producer of zinc, lead, silver, and copper for many decades and remains a major active industrial operation under Volcan Compania Minera. For mineral collectors, Animon is highly regarded for producing exceptional specimens of sulfides and sulfosalts. It is particularly famous for its sharp, lustrous crystals of galena, sphalerite, and chalcopyrite, as well as rarer species like huaronite and various silver-bearing minerals. The specimens are often found in vugs and cavities along the vein systems, frequently associated with clear quartz or pinkish rhodochrosite, making them some of the most sought-after Peruvian mineral samples on the modern market.
