Spinel

specimen number:
1641083

location:
Mogok, Mandalay, Myanmar

description:

Lustrous glassy slightly translucent beautiful red octahedral crystals of spinel measuring to 2.1 cm in size on a white marble matrix. This is in excellent condition and is absolutely superb for the species. The color contrast is wonderful.

Mogok, located in the Pyin Oo Lwin District of Upper Myanmar, is famously known as the Valley of Rubies and represents one of the most prolific gemstone tracts on Earth. Geologically, the region is part of the Mogok Metamorphic Belt, where high-grade regional metamorphism occurred during the collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates. The primary deposits are hosted within crystalline marbles and calc-silicate rocks that were subjected to intense heat and pressure, causing the growth of spectacular crystals within the host rock. Historically, Mogok has been a source of precious stones for over a thousand years, originally supplying the Burmese monarchy and later becoming a global center for gem trading during the British colonial era. While rubies are the most famous export, Mogok is equally renowned for producing the world's finest spinel specimens. These spinels are prized for their perfect octahedral crystal habit and an incredible range of colors, including the iconic "Jedi" neon red, vibrant pinks, and deep violets. Most Mogok spinel is recovered from "byon," a local term for the gem-bearing alluvial gravels found in the valley floors, where the durable crystals have accumulated over millions of years of erosion. Today, the area remains an active artisanal mining hub where traditional methods are still used to extract some of the most sought-after collector-grade spinels in the international market.
