Beautiful light pink gem terminated crystal of kunzite, this is the variety of spodumene. In excellent condition. The specimen comes with an antique label that will date this to the very early 20th century. The label is shown at the end of the video. The specimen was acquired from the American dealer Lazard Cahn. Gem mining in San Diego County, California grew from late 19th century discoveries of gem bearing granitic pegmatites in the Pala and Mesa Grande districts, where tourmaline and lithium minerals occur in pockets and veins. Formal mining in the Pala district began in the 1870s, with the most active period roughly 1900 to 1922, producing tourmaline plus gem spodumene (kunzite) and beryl (morganite), among others.
