A pink transparent crystal grouping of spodumene almost 6.0 cm in length embedded up on a matrix of blocky orthoclase crystals with albite. This is in good condition. This is the variety of the species often called kunzite.

The Nuristan region of eastern Afghanistan, situated within the rugged Hindu Kush mountain system, is characterized by complex metamorphic and igneous geology featuring extensive granitic pegmatite fields formed during regional tectonic collisions. Historically remote and challenging to access, these mountainous areas have nevertheless supported a long tradition of artisanal gem mining. The pegmatites host a variety of lithium-bearing minerals, most notably the pink to lilac variety of spodumene known as kunzite. Discovered in these rugged pegmatite pockets, kunzite forms from hydrothermal activity and crystallization in volatile-rich environments, with its characteristic color resulting from trace amounts of manganese exposed to natural radiation over geological time scales.
