2312413

location:
Oreshnik, Topolovgrad, Haskovo, Bulgaria

description:

Classic twinned crystal grouping of staurolite almost 4.5 cm in size embedded up on matrix. In good condition.

Oreshnik, a village located in the Topolovgrad municipality of the Haskovo Province in southeastern Bulgaria, is situated within a region characterized by complex metamorphic and igneous terrains of the Sakar-Strandja zone. Geologically, the area features regional metamorphic rocks shaped by tectonic processes that created favorable conditions for accessory mineral formation. Mineralogically, Oreshnik has gained international renown among collectors for producing exceptional, sharp, and well-developed specimens of twinned staurolite, a silicate mineral famous for its distinct cruciform penetration twins. Historically, while the region has old agrarian and small-scale local roots, its recognition in the global mineral community stems from modern specimen collecting that brought its remarkable brown-to-black cross-shaped staurolite crystals to museums and private collections worldwide.
