Cattle Creek, located near Cloncurry and Mount Isa in western Queensland, Australia, is a well-known mineral locality situated within the Mount Isa Inlier, an ancient and highly mineralized geological region featuring Proterozoic metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. Regionally, the geology consists of deformed schists and gneisses that underwent intense regional metamorphism, creating ideal high-temperature and high-pressure conditions for the formation of accessory minerals. Mineralogically, the site is famous for producing exceptional specimens of staurolite, a silicate mineral renowned for its characteristic twinning habits. Staurolite crystals from this area frequently form distinct cross-shaped penetration twins oriented at sixty or ninety degree angles, often referred to as fairy crosses or Maltese crosses.
