Bright metallic crystallized stephanite throughout all sides of this matrix with minor pyrargyrite. Damage is present as seen, still quite nice with the lot of crystallization present. The specimen comes with a previous label from dealer Larry Conklin.

Schneeberg, located in the western Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge) of Saxony, Germany, is one of the most historically significant mining districts in Europe for silver, cobalt, and bismuth. Geologically, the region is characterized by a complex system of hydrothermal polymetallic veins hosted in Paleozoic metamorphic schists that were intruded by the Eibenstock granite. Stephanite, a rare silver antimony sulfide, is found here as magnificent, jet-black, short-prismatic or tabular crystals, often displaying a brilliant metallic luster and associated with other silver minerals like acanthite and proustite. Historically, mining and quarrying at Schneeberg began in the mid-15th century, with the legendary silver strike of 1471 leading to a massive rush and the establishment of the Neustadtl mining field. The district became a world leader in cobalt production during the 16th through 19th centuries, fueling the European blue pigment (smalt) industry, and later became a major source of bismuth and uranium. Commercial mining operations spanned over 500 years, with significant activity continuing under the SAG/SDAG Wismut company after World War II until the final closure of the mines in the late 1950s. Today, Schneeberg is a recognized UNESCO World Heritage site, celebrated for its well-preserved technical monuments and its role as a type locality for several mineral species through 2026.

Lawrence Conklin was a world-renowned mineral dealer based in New York City, widely regarded as one of the most knowledgeable and sophisticated figures in the history of the mineral trade. Operating from his office on 5th Avenue and later from his home in Connecticut, Conklin specialized in "antique" minerals and specimens with significant historical provenance. He was a meticulous researcher and an elegant writer, often publishing articles that corrected historical errors in mineralogical literature. His career spanned over five decades, during which he handled some of the finest known specimens from classic European and American localities, setting a high standard for aesthetic quality and documentation in the field.
