Stephanite with Pyrargyrite, Galena
specimen number:
1052573
location:
Freiberg, Saxony, Germany
description: The Freiberg mining district in Saxony, Germany, is one of the most historically significant silver-producing regions in the world, serving as a center for European mining for over eight hundred years. Geologically, the deposit is located in the Erzgebirge, or Ore Mountains, and consists of an extensive network of hydrothermal veins hosted within metamorphic rocks such as gneiss and schist. These veins were formed during the Variscan orogeny and are characterized by a diverse mineralogy including silver, lead, zinc, and copper, with famous occurrences of native silver, argentite, and various sulfosalts. Historically, the first silver was discovered in 1168, leading to the rapid growth of the city and the eventual founding of the Freiberg Mining Academy in 1765, the oldest school of metallurgy and mining in the world. Operations were nearly continuous from the Middle Ages through the 19th century, with a brief industrial resurgence in the 20th century under the East German government. Commercial mining finally ceased in 1969, but the district remains an invaluable site for mineralogical research and is preserved as part of a UNESCO World Heritage site celebrating the regions profound industrial legacy.
Metallic crystallized stephanite across the top of matrix with quartz. The specimen comes with an antique label as shown at the end of the video and dates to the very early 20th century, if not earlier.
