The Jalgaon district, situated in the northern region of Maharashtra, India, is recognized as a major source of basalt aggregate and secondary zeolite minerals. Geologically, the area is part of the extensive Deccan Traps, a continental flood basalt province formed by volcanic activity approximately 65 to 66 million years ago during the late Cretaceous period. As the thick basaltic lava flows cooled, trapped volcanic gases formed numerous vesicular cavities and vugs. Subsequent low-temperature hydrothermal fluids and groundwater interactions migrating through these cavities deposited a suite of secondary minerals, including apophyllite, stilbite, heulandite, mordenite, powellite, and quartz. Commercial quarrying in the region grew significantly in the mid-to-late twentieth century, operating as open-pit quarries targeting the dense basalt for infrastructure, road building, and industrial aggregate. Mineral specimen extraction operates entirely as a byproduct of these active aggregate operations, expanding in the 1970s and continuing through the early twenty-first century, with specific locations like the Savda quarries remaining active into the present day.
