Gowganda in Ontario, Canada is a historic mining community located in the Cobalt silver mining region of northeastern Ontario. Mining activity developed in the early 20th century after the discovery of rich silver deposits in veins within Precambrian rocks. The district produced silver along with cobalt and nickel minerals and supported several mines and milling operations. Gowganda later declined as silver production decreased but remains known for its mining history and mineral specimens from the region.

Stromeyerite is a copper silver sulfide mineral that forms in hydrothermal vein deposits associated with other sulfide minerals. It was first described in 1819 and named in honor of the German chemist Friedrich Stromeyer.
