Crystallized strontianite very rich across the top of matrix. In good condition. Whitesmith Mine is a historic barite, lead and zinc mine near Strontian in the Highlands of Scotland, named after John Whitesmith, an English miner active in the area in the early 1700s. The mine worked the Strontian Main Vein via a shallow adit and deep shafts into mineralised zones of barite with galena (lead) and sphalerite (zinc). Much of the eastern workings were destroyed by later quarrying, but the western workings and spoil heaps remain as evidence of 18th and 19th century mining in the district that is also famous as the type locality for the mineral strontianite.
