Strontianite after Celestine

specimen number:
2282066

location:
Lime City, Wood Co., Ohio, USA

description:
A loose sharply formed blocky crystal of what was once Celestine, this now replaced by strontianite. In good condition.

The Lime City quarry operations, situated near Perrysburg in Wood County, Ohio, are historic limestone and dolomite extraction sites centered within a notable mineralized district. Geologically, the area sits on the crest of the Findlay Arch, where Silurian to Devonian carbonate rocks, specifically the Lockport Dolomite and the Salina Group, were subjected to the migration of localized, low-temperature hydrothermal fluids. These highly mineralized, strontium-rich brines dissolved portions of the limestone and precipitated rich assemblages of secondary minerals within open regional fracture systems, joints, and solution vugs. Quarrying operations at Lime City commenced during the late nineteenth century, around 1887, to fulfill heavy regional industrial demands for lime, glass-making fluxes, and construction aggregates. Extraction scaled up continuously through the early twentieth century under operators like the Maumee Stone Company, but deep industrial quarrying at the original sites slowed down by the mid-twentieth century as operations shifted or reached local property limits.

Pseudomorphs from the Lime City localities frequently present classic examples of chemical substitution where strontianite alters after pre-existing celestine crystals. Geologically, this epimorphic and replacement process occurs when strontium-rich celestine, an orthorhombic strontium sulfate mineral, reacts with changing groundwater chemistries that carry high concentrations of dissolved carbonate ions. Over extended periods, the carbonated fluids dissolve the sulfate molecules and replace them with strontianite, a strontium carbonate mineral, often preserving the exact original habits, blocky crystal geometries, and sharp orthorhombic terminations of the parent celestine. The resulting specimens typically manifest as dull to lustrous, white to cream-colored porous aggregates or complete crusts of fine-grained microcrystalline strontianite that completely mimic the external forms of the primary celestine crystals upon which they grew.
