Strontioginorite

specimen number:
9302356

location:
Kohnstein Quarry, Niedersachswerfen, Harztor, Nordhausen, Thuringia, Germany

description:

Excellent for the species with colorless gemmy transparent prismatic terminated crystals to 1.8 cm in size on matrix. In very good condition.

The Kohnstein Quarry, located near Niedersachswerfen and Nordhausen in Thuringia, Germany, is a prominent geological site. Geologically, the hill is composed of thick Zechstein evaporite deposits, primarily massive anhydrite and gypsum, formed in ancient marine basins. Historically, extensive underground gypsum mining began in the region by the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Mineralogically, the quarry became world-famous among researchers and collectors for its rare borate and sulfate minerals found within the evaporite strata, most notably strontioginorite, a scarce hydrated strontium borate species that formed exceptional, highly lustrous crystal specimens studied by European mineralogists.
