description: Steamboat Springs, located just south of Reno, Nevada, is a renowned active geothermal and hydrothermal system with a history rooted in Native American use, mid-nineteenth-century Gold Rush travel, and subsequent development as a historic spa and early geothermal research site. Geologically, the area is characterized by a series of Pliocene to Quaternary rhyolitic lava domes and fault-controlled thermal springs driven by deep circulating meteoric waters heated by underlying magmatic activity. Mineralogically, the system is famous for depositing siliceous sinters, cinnabar, stibnite, and native sulfur, the latter of which forms through the oxidation of hydrogen sulfide gases in shallow, acid-leached fumarolic environments.
An attractive lustrous slightly translucent yellow skeletal crystal of native sulfur. Double terminated and complete all around, in great condition.
