The Stoneco Quarry, located in Maybee, Monroe County, Michigan, is a significant industrial site primarily known for the production of crushed stone and high-quality mineral specimens. Geologically, the quarry excavates the Raisin River Dolomite, which is part of the Upper Silurian Bass Islands Group. The rock consists of fine-grained dolostone that contains numerous vugs and cavities where secondary mineralization has occurred. This locality is world-famous among collectors for producing some of the finest celestine crystals in North America, often appearing as large, transparent, tabular crystals with a delicate blue tint, frequently associated with sulfur and calcite. Historically, the quarry has been an active site for aggregate production for several decades, with the current operations under Stoneco of Michigan (a subsidiary of Oldcastle APG) dating back to the mid-20th century. While the primary focus remains the extraction of limestone and dolomite for construction and infrastructure, the site has remained a legendary destination for mineralogical study due to the unique geochemical environment that allowed for the growth of its iconic strontium-bearing minerals.
