Sulfur

specimen number:
2102262

location:
Gessolungo mines, Caltanissetta, Sicily, Italy

description:

Beautiful yellow well-formed crystals of slightly translucent native sulfur measuring to almost 4.0 cm in size across both sides of this matrix. The crystals on the bottom side are slightly cleaved as seen in the video, from the top this is in excellent condition. A beautiful example for the species.

The Gessolungo Mine, located near Caltanissetta in central Sicily, Italy, was a major center for the extraction of native sulfur from the celebrated Gessoso-Solfifera Formation. Geologically, these deposits formed during the Messinian salinity crisis approximately 5 to 6 million years ago, when the Mediterranean Sea underwent partial desiccation, leading to the precipitation of massive evaporites including gypsum and limestone which were later bio-reductively transformed into sulfur. The mine is famous for producing world-class specimens of sharp, bright yellow sulfur crystals often perched on contrasting white celestine or gray matrix. Historically, Gessolungo was part of the industrial sulfur boom of the 19th century, with operations peaking in the late 1800s when Sicily produced the majority of the world's sulfur supply. However, the mine is also tragically remembered for a major underground explosion and fire in 1881 that claimed the lives of 65 miners, including many young "carusi" laborers. Commercial mining at the site eventually declined due to competition from the Frasch process in the United States, with most Sicilian sulfur operations, including Gessolungo, closing by the mid-20th century.
