description: Sussexite is a manganese borate mineral that usually forms in metamorphosed manganese rich deposits and commonly appears as pale pink to white fibrous masses. It is typically associated with other manganese minerals in altered sedimentary or metamorphic rocks. The Bengal, also called the Cannon Mine, near Iron River in Iron County, Michigan lies within the western Upper Peninsula mining region, where small operations explored iron and manganese bearing deposits during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
An outstanding example for the species, especially coming from this area. The specimen consists almost entirely of chatoyant crystallized acicular groupings of sussexite. This is in terrific condition. The specimen has been confirmed by x-ray by George Robinson. This was collected by a Walter Anderson.
