The Day Book Quarry, located in northern Yancey County within the Spruce Pine mining district of western North Carolina, is a notable ultramafic body known as the Day Book Dunite. Geologically, the deposit consists primarily of a fault-bounded, un-serpentinized sliver of Precambrian mantle-derived peridotite enclosed within the regional metamorphic gneisses and schists of the Blue Ridge Province. Mineralogically, the deposit is composed predominantly of forsterite olivine alongside accessory chromite, chlorite, and magnesite, occasionally producing distinct chromitite banding and secondary amphibole minerals. Historically, the site and surrounding prospects were developed during the twentieth century as a source of industrial olivine and refractory materials, and it remains a point of significant geological interest for the study of Appalachian ultramafic rocks.
