Large lustrous metallic crystals of tetrahedrite measuring to 2.5 cm in size across the top of a sulfide massive matrix. Crystallized calcite and quartz are present as well. Minimal damage present. Nice large crystals for the species. Mining at Casapalca, Peru takes place in the central Andes east of Lima and has been active since the late 19th century, focusing on polymetallic hydrothermal vein deposits rich in zinc, lead, silver, and copper. The district is hosted in volcanic and sedimentary rocks that were fractured and mineralized by intrusive activity, forming numerous steep veins worked by underground methods. Over time Casapalca became one of Perus important high altitude mining centers, with concentrators and transport links supporting regional metal production. The area is also well known among mineral collectors for fine specimens of sphalerite, galena, pyrite, and other sulfide minerals from this classic Andean mining district.
