The Cavnic mining district, located in Maramures County within the Gutai Mountains of northern Romania, is situated in a region of significant Neogene volcanic activity. Geologically, the deposit consists of complex hydrothermal vein systems hosted within volcanic rocks and underlying Paleogene sediments, which were mineralized during Miocene-aged igneous events. Cavnic is world-renowned for producing exceptionally sharp, lustrous metallic tetrahedrite crystals, which frequently occur as well-defined tetrahedrons often associated with bright brassy chalcopyrite, white quartz, or delicate pink rhodochrosite. Historically, mining and quarrying in Cavnic date back to at least the 14th century, with official documents from 1336 mentioning the settlement as a mining hub. Large-scale industrial operations expanded significantly under Austro-Hungarian rule and continued throughout the 20th century under state management, focusing on the extraction of lead, zinc, copper, and silver. Although major commercial underground mining officially ceased around 2006 due to economic restructuring, the locality remains one of the most famous in Europe for its diversity of high-quality sulfide and sulfosalt specimens.
