The specimen comes with a previous label from the Foote Company out of Philadelphia. Note that the locality on the old label is most likely incorrect.

The Adun Cholon Range (also spelled Adun-Chilon), located in the Zabaykalsky Krai region of Eastern Siberia, Russia, is one of the most significant historical gemstone localities in the world. Geologically, the deposit is centered around Sherlova Gora and consists of high-temperature hydrothermal vein systems and greisens associated with a late Jurassic granitic intrusion. These deposits are rich in beryllium and fluorine, which led to the formation of spectacular crystals of topaz, aquamarine, and smoky quartz within cavities in the altered granite and surrounding metamorphic rocks. Historically, the gemstone potential of the range was first reported in 1723 by a local resident named Ivan Gurkov. Systematic mining for gemstones and rare metals began shortly thereafter in the 1720s and continued throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, supplying many of the finest specimens found in early Russian and European museum collections. While industrial focus shifted toward tin, lead, and zinc in the 20th century (specifically from 1930 to the 1970s), the area remains a legendary source for historical topaz specimens.

The Foote Mineral Company was a pioneering American firm that played a vital role in the commercialization of rare minerals and elements during the late 19th and 20th centuries. The company was founded in Philadelphia in 1876 by Dr. Albert Edward Foote, a former chemistry professor who initially established the business as a premier mineral dealership following his success at the Centennial Exposition. Operating out of locations like Belmont Avenue and Lancaster Avenue, the company originally specialized in selling high-quality mineral specimens and scientific books to collectors and institutions worldwide. As the 20th century progressed, the company transitioned from a specimen dealership into a major industrial chemical and metallurgical corporation. They moved their primary operations to Exton and Frazer, Pennsylvania, where they became global leaders in the production of lithium, zirconium, and other specialized metals. The company underwent several acquisitions in the late 1900s, but its Philadelphia roots remain a cornerstone of American mineralogical history, marking the shift from natural history collecting to modern industrial chemistry.
