The Hematita deposit, situated near Antonio Dias in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, is a notable gemstone locality famous for the discovery of exceptional alexandrite and chrysoberyl specimens. Geologically, the deposit consists of gem-bearing pegmatites and associated alluvial gravels hosted within Precambrian metamorphic and granitic terranes, where localized geochemical conditions permitted the crystallization of fine color-change chrysoberyl within weathered pocket zones. Artisanal mining at the site began intensely in October 1986 following an accidental discovery by local prospectors, triggering a major gem rush that rapidly attracted thousands of miners to the area. The most intensive and productive extraction phase was relatively brief, largely winding down within a decade due to the shallow, geologically constrained nature of the primary mineralized zone, though intermittent small-scale salvage and localized artisanal operations have continued sporadically into the 2020s.
